A recent graduate of a 40-hour certification course contacted us yesterday to ask for some guidance. She was eager to start work as a Registered Behavior Technician, but was unsure how to find someone to conduct the initial competency exam. Simply put, if you're not already employed by an agency, company or non-profit that provides applied behavior analysis services, the easiest way to get your initial competency exam is to get hired by an agency, company or non-profit that provides applied behavior analysis services. Many employers are willing to bring a potential RBT on board with the understanding that they will provide the competency exam to their new employee (and support them through the rest of the process.)  For more information on how the competency process works, check out this guide from the BACB .

New rules on becoming a Registered Behavior Technician

Becoming an RBT is one of the more rewarding career decisions you could make. It's also one of the more complicated.  The rules and guidelines on courses, applications and testing to be a Registered Behavior Technician seem to change on a fairly regular basis. And the Behavior Analyst Certification Board , which oversees the RBT profession, has announced that new rules are coming in just a few more days! What does that mean for you? Very little. The changes rolling out in early 2025 are all related to t he way an applicant submits a certification application after  completing a 40-hour certification course.  If you're interested in becoming an RBT, you still need to start with the 40-hour course. The rules about the content in that course are not expected to change in the near future. Looking for a 40-hour RBT training course? Here's the one we recommend .
